Helpful Hints:

  • Food is fuel which is measured in calories. Weight gain is excess energy that is
    waiting to be burned off. 
  • Exercise for 1 hour a day
  • Drink a glass of water within 5 minutes of waking up in the morning
  • Eat a big breakfast
  • 8-10 glasses of water a day
  • Don’t eat after 7:00 pm
  • No white flour or sugar
  • Breathe deeply 5 times a day

What Is A Good Portion Size?

  • ½ cup vegetables or beans is a rounded handful
  • ½ cup cooked whole grain pasta, rice or other whole grains looks like
    one small ice cream scoop
  • 1 medium piece fresh fruit is the size of a baseball
  • ¼ cup dried fruit is the size of a golf ball
  • ¼ cup nuts is a level handful (measure this once to see)
  • 3 ounces of cooked lean protein is the size of your palm

Recommended Daily Intake:

  Fruit 2 servings - ½ large or 1 medium

 
  Vegetables 4 to 5 servings - ½ cup each  
  Whole Grains 3 servings  - ½ cup each
   1 slice whole grain breads
 
  Lean Protein 3 servings - serving size varies:
   Legumes – ½ cup
   Whole grains – ½ cup
   Nuts & seeds – ¼ cup
   Chicken, fish, soy protein – 3 ounces

 
  Fats 3 servings - serving size varies:
   Nuts & seeds – ¼ cup
   Oils – 1 tablespoon
